How to Stay Safe at a Music Festival

With all of the events that happened at Astroworld one of the important things to talk about is how to stay safe at festivals. To give a little insight on Astroworld, 10 people passed away from the crowd being so compressed and medics not being able to get to them in time. It was a terrible circumstance and even though festivals and concerts can be fun, they can also be dangerous if you are not careful.

Festivals can be an absolutely amazing time, with everyone dressed in crazy colorful clothes and dancing their hearts out, but they can also be pretty intimidating if you have never been. People get drunk or other things and can act really crazy. Everybody just gets so excited and amped to see their favorite artists that they completely lose sight of others around them. I recently went to a smaller festival called Breakaway in North Carolina. Even though the festival was really small, I still experienced a lot of this negative crowd mentality. There was even one drunk guy, who was about 6’7 who was literally pushing everyone around him, even smaller girls, and trying to start a mosh pit. At that point I just had to walk away from the front of the stage because I didn’t even feel safe anymore. And sometime that’s necessary. I’ve been to about 4 different festivals and here is some of the knowledge that I have learned that I want to share with some of my fellow music lovers.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, HYDRATE

I can NOT stress this enough. You are literally dancing around for hours. I have had 12+ hour days at a festival and I swear I was dancing for at least two thirds of that. If you don’t drink water I guarantee that you will either pass out, experience severe cramping, worsen your hangover even more, or worse. I recommend bringing a camelback and wearing it the whole time. There are multiple stations at every music festival that will let you fill up your water for free.

2. Bring a fan

This past festival was the first time that I have ever brought a fan and I swear it changed my whole festival experience. Not only will everyone around you love you and will let you stand in front of them so they can get even a little bit of the amazing breeze, but it will keep you from feeling like you are suffocating when you have hundreds of sweaty bodies around you.

3. Don’t Spend A Lot of $

I’m not saying to sneak in alcohol…but I’m also not saying not to. If someone were to sneak in alcohol there might be a link below to a WineRack Booze Bra that fits perfectly and can be easily concealed. Also, it makes you feel like Dolly Parton, I mean from what I have heard…

4. Take a Break

It’s great to be at the front and seeing your favorite artists that close, but no one can keep that up for 8 hours. Being in the front is exhausting and at some point, especially when you start feeling light-headed, you need to walk away and take a break. I promise if you maneuver it right, you will make it back to the front, but that break will literally save your life sometimes.

5. Drink, But Not Too Much

Trust me I have been way too inebriated at a concert before, but all that leads to is throw up, your friends having to carry you to an Uber, and you forgetting the entire show. Have a good time but you have all day. There is no need to take a bazillion shots.

6. Stay Calm & Carry On

The chances are that at some point, considering the huge crowd and even bigger amount of alcohol, you will lose your friends. The frustrating thing is that with all of the people at the show, you probably will have little to no cell service as well. I have lost my friends and my friends have lost me countless time, but the trick is to just have fun with it. Don’t freak out about being alone, you will eventually find your people. Make some new friends, dance with them, get on someone’s shoulders if they will let you, and enjoy the show.
